The most Christmassy Places to Spend Your Christmas
Christmas is that special time of the year; for most of us it represents some time off work, an excuse to catch up with friends and, for the lucky ones, a day where you are surrounded by the ones you are closest to. As you get older, sometimes that Christmas spirit gets lost in a sea of crowded shopping centres and panic over buying the perfect present. At Travel Design we believe that the Christmas Spirit is still alive within all of us, but sometimes you might have to take a break from your traditional Christmas and visit the cities of the world that celebrate Christmas like no other. Here are five destinations that will remind you why you love Christmas.
It doesn’t come more magical than Lapland for Christmas. If the thought of Husky sledding, a Reindeer sleigh ride and meeting the real Santa Claus doesn’t make you inner child squeal with excitement then bah humbug to you. Staying in a cosy cabin with a an open fire while watching the snow fall outside is the Christmas that Christmas movies have taught us that we deserve, so indulge just this once, and remember how it feels to believe in Santa Claus.
There is no nation that enjoys a celebration and party as much as the Irish, they famously love a good time and there is no better reason to celebrate than Christmas. The city of Cork is one place where they truly embrace Christmas. Marvel at the Christmas lights decorating the entire city, take a seat at the local bar and have a hot toddy as you listen to the Ireland’s favourite Christmas Song ‘Fairytale of New York’ and feel the tingles run down your spine.
New York always does everything with a bit more pizzazz than anywhere else and why would Christmas be any exception. The Rockefeller Christmas Tree is a site to behold itself and its feature in several Christmas movies brings alive the Christmas spirit in you. Gaze at the Christmas windows, take a spin ice skating at central park and finish up with some eggnog… yep, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
A visit to Europe’s ‘Capital of Christmas’ is guaranteed to bring out the spirit of Christmas in all of us. Christmas markets are a glorious symbol of the best things about this time of year, there is this incredible atmosphere as you wonder around drinking mulled wine and meander the stalls. There are many extraordinary Christmas markets in Europe but Strasbourg is home to the biggest and best Christmas market with over 300 stalls spread out over the city centre. This city loves Christmas and will remind you that you do as well.
For those who are a little tired of the commercialism of Christmas and would like to check back into the true meaning of Christmas you can celebrate the season in the town where Jesus Christ is said to have been born, Bethlehem. The Christmas Eve Midnight Mass as the Church of Nativity is the key event. Reconnecting to the true meaning of Christmas, whatever that means to you, is good for the soul… and your Christmas spirit.
We at Travel Design International hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, most of all stay safe and look after each other. We are looking forward to a busy 2017 helping you plan your travel adventures near and far.
